The designer of this month: Saskia Heijmans, also known as SaskiaYda on Instagram. You might have crossed her already on our Instagram. For example with her beautiful swan-pattern or the fun scissor-pattern you saw in our previous blog. But did you know she doesn’t just makes drawings, but draw(s)ings as well?
"Sometimes I like to sing it out loud, very loud!"
Singing out loud
“With singing and drawing I can totally express my feelings. In the past I kind of struggled with that. While singing I was always afraid of making mistakes, which made it difficult to learn singing. At one day I dread going to a repetition because I was afraid of hitting a wrong note. I thought to myself: Is this really necessary? I love singing, I want to sing without (performance)anxiety and fully enjoy it.”
Is it that late already?
Do you know that feeling when you’re busy with drawing, singing, playing guitar or something else you like to do, you look at the time and suddenly it’s already two hours later! Those are the moments you’re fully enjoying something. But if you have performance anxiety, you are fully aware of the time. And that’s such a pity! “That’s why I started to work on it. I learned that making mistakes is a good thing. I was so interested that I immersed myself into how the body works and how it reacts to pressure. I learned how to deal with this pressure, so you can keep forgetting the time while doing what you love the most. I write about it in my draw(s)ingblog.”
Draw(s)ing?
"I make drawings that fit the music. Sometimes I sing out loud while doing so. I can really express my feelings through music. But when I make a drawing, I can record that feeling. This way I can express and relativize my feelings, in a fun, creative way! This all comes back in my blog, and I hope to help people by sharing my feelings, the revelations and drawings that go with it. “
CHERRY PIE
“Music is like a sweet pie: a crusty bottom made from tempo and rhythm, a rich stuffing of harmony, and a topping of melody. If you eat the cream-cake, you can munch on the sweets, only eat the cherries and leave the rest. But if you’re going to make the pie you need all ingredients. Otherwise it just will never be a cherry pie. And what do you do when you make the recipe? Right, you start with the pie shell, the bottom.”
Small worlds
Saskia her style is sweet, cozy and a bit fairy-like. “I get most of my inspiration from things surrounding my, things I love. Think of beautiful nature, plants, vintage stuff, animals and fairy tales. In fairy tales there is no fear, you can imagine everything the way you want it to. you do everything you like. Maybe that’s why I like to draw it so much. I create small worlds with a story.”
Silent dreams
“Right now I work in my studio, I have everything at hand. In the future I want to have a real-life shop, a workspace or an atelier for my company Illu-ster. I want to work here with others and I also want to teach. Not only illustrating, but also teach in singing! My biggest dream is illustrating for a magazine some day.
I love it that I can now print my designs on fabric vai Motiflow. I enjoy sewing as well and it was a long-carried wish to work with self printed fabric. Very soon I will also sell self-made products in my online webshop. “
Tip from Saskia Heijmans
"Follow your heart and do what you what you love to do most. And do it out loud!”
Dillema, you have to choose...
‘Never sing again or never make illustrations again?’
No! Do I have to choose? That’s impossible! With my mind I would choose to keep illustrating, because that’s something you can (hopefully) keep on doing when you’re getting older. So, never sing again.. but what a lame question!” (She shouts out loud..)
Well, a big relieve for you Saskia, you can keep doing both! And we can keep enjoying it.
