The chilly weather keeps creeping in. This means long, warm leggings and coziness! That's why in this blog we will show you how to make a kids legging. The Cotton Jersey fabric from Motiflow is soft and stretchy. Ideal for climbing, crawling and rolling! Be honest.. don't you want to run around in leggings all day long? 😉
What do you need?
- A sewing pattern
- Pattern drawing paper
- Cotton Jersey fabric (based on the dimensions of the sewing pattern)
- Yarn
- Textile scissor
- Sewing machine
- Pins
How do I start?
1. Find a sewing pattern you like
First you need a sewing pattern for the legging, you can find it online or in a magazine. The sewing pattern we used is from the Knippie magazine, Nr. 2 april-may 2017. If you've found a pattern, you can start tracing the lines of the pattern on your pattern drawing paper. After you did you can cut it out. Make sure you are able keep the parts apart, you can pin a paper on it with the name of the pattern part.
2. Pin it up!
Now it's time to grab your fabric. Pin the pattern drawing paper on the fabric and after that you can cut it out. You can choose to leave the pattern paper on the fabric but I alway choose to get it off.
3. Follow the instructions
You can follow the instruction of the sewing pattern you've found. In our case, we first sewed to left and right leg to each other. You can do the same with the other side.
4. Back pockets and kneepads
Before you sew the front and back of the legging to each other you can choose to make back pockets and kneepads. We went all the way and chose to do both! The fun part of this extra detail on your legging is that you can play with the prints you choose at Motiflow. We chose two different fabrics to get a playful effect. You can also order a smaller piece of fabric at Motiflow. You can choose between 50, 100 and 150cm width and the length is from 1 meter.
Pay attention: before you sew the back pocket on it, you need to flank the upper edge. This way you finish it nicely. At the kneepad you can choose to first stitch the fabric roughly by hand, so you can flank the edges. This is not the easiest job, but you will learn!
5. Stap A or B
For this step you have to options. It's just what you like most and what works for you. The first one is more difficult than the other. Option A is the more challenging way and option B is a bit easier. Both options are achievable for everybody!
Step 5.A
Sew the front- and back to each other. Now you've got the the last part, the finishing off the brim and from the lower part of the legs. You do the same for all edges. Cut 2 times a piece of fabric along the whole width and make it 6 cm wide. Fold the piece of fabric and stitch it to to edges. It creates a nice tunnel in the fabric. You can pull a piece of elastic trough it so it will stuck, but you can also choose to not use elastic. Sew the tunnels of the front and backside to each other and then the upper edge is finished! You the same by the lower edge of the legs. And voila, you're done!
Step 5.B
You now made the front and back side of the legging and maybe you also sew some awesome kneepads and buttocks. Now it's time to fold the front and backsdie of the legging and to stitch it. You will get a small tunnel at the upper edge. It's up to you if you pull an elastic trough it so it will stuck. You can do the exact same at the bottom of the legs.
You're almost there!!
When all the tunnels are ready it's time to sew the front and backside to each other and admire the beautiful end result! Voila, there's your selfmade legging. Time to make someone very happy with it!
